Yet another rather useless review since this item will be out of the menu on 28th April, but fat bois gotta do what fat bois do.
Popeye’s Chicken & Waffle set – S$8.90
- Chicken & Waffle (ala carte S$6.90)
- Mashed Potatoes
So far, looks pretty faithful to the advertisement.
Dissecting the Waffle
The Waffle was crispy on the outside and very airy in the middle. I like my waffles denser than this, as I prefer a slightly chewier bite with more substance. The consistency of this waffle, while not terrible, feels similar to one that is frozen packaged and reheated rather than freshly made. I could be wrong, but I’m not very impressed.
Popeye’s chicken are juicy with a nice crispy crust. There’s however quite little meat. Or if you’re the glass half full type of person, there’s more waffles than chicken. The taste on the whole, is as advertised; salty from the cheese, savoury from the chicken, spiciness and sweetness from the spicy maple. It is a comforting taste, yet the texture of the waffles and quantity given leaves much more to be desired in this meal.
Popeye’s mashed potatoes are however, pretty good tasting. The potatoes themselves are creamy both in texture and taste even without the sauce to provide moisture. Small meaty portions in the sauce gives it a little bite and extra savouriness.
Rating for Popeye’s Chicken & Waffle:
I rate food based on how far I am willing to travel, as well as whether I think the price I paid for it justifies it. You can read more about why here.
Just nothing exciting. Will not miss this when it goes out of the menu.
I just don’t see how this is worth it. If I were at Popeye’s, I would rather buy something else. I might buy a fried chicken combo then walk to a neighbourhood bread stall and buy some waffles.
But I’m just a fat boi… What do other people think?
GoodfyFeed Wants it as a permanent item. 6/5.
ChopeBlog was similarly disappointed in the waffles, and found the cheese and sauce artificial. Pretty good low budget option.
